1H912 Telechron Questions
« on: March 04, 2024, 09:08:08 PM »
Hi guys,
I havent posted in a while but I always come back to Telechron Time!

A friend gave me a Telechron Commercial 1H912 School type clock. I seem to gravitate to these as they are large wall hangers and my workshop just begs for more of them. This particular one is of the 1939 WW2 era  as it is made from that composite material which was to substitute for metal. Kinda funky with brown wrinkle paint. Hope theres no asbestos in it!

Anyway, he mentioned the clock ran very loud. In testing it out I have found the noise is in the gear train, the motor purrs like a kitten. I am in the process of disassembly and cannot for the life of me remember how to remove the rather delicate looking hour hand, it looks pressed on?

Got the second and minute (knurled ring nut) removed, but I dont want to bugger it up. Also the flat shaped round time set knob....it appears that the knob is attached to a hollow 6 Inch ferrule which then threaded onto the mechanism- not the typical remove the knob (tightening direction) as in most of these. Knob looks like it comes off with 6" ferrule attached. Is it reverse thread? Is there a how to this as well?

Thats about it all around the clock appears to be a good one.Debating whether or not to respray the brown wrinkle of substitute another color...maybe dark green or black? Were there anyother OEM wrinkle colors other than brown?

I'll post pics when I have some. Thanks Greg "Outtatime" :.D

The hour hands are real buggers to get off.  They are pressed on.  The usual fixes apply be it heat, solvent.  I usually put several drops of napth on the hand-movement interface.  Then use 2 screwdrivers supported on a plastic card under the hand and pry upward.  It usually takes awhile to get it loose.
The copper tube connected to the movement is right hand threads.  At least I am 50% sure of it.

I have only seen brown cases.  Be aware that the more paint that gets applied to the case the less of the original case texture.

Thanks for the reply. I managed to get the minute hand off with a plastic comb as a pry tool and paperboard to protect the face. Popped right off! The "time adjustment ferrule" was a bit harder but held the threaded spline with tiny vise grips, and twisted ever to gently with some adjustable pliers - tape on the knob to protect it. Eventually it unscrewed- the correct direction...Lefty Loseey.

I think I'll just keep the original finish its not too bad. Working on this clock was easy. I miss the whole simplicity of electric clock repair. Ahhhh....

This one will keep time in our twin daughter's bedroom. They have been asking for a clock, this one will blow their minds. Almost as much as seeing my dad's restored Automatic Electric Monophone rotary dial telephone with chrome bezels! Sha Zamm!

My next clock restoration is a" late model" GE school clock (1960's) Plastic chrome bezel, noisy heck and impossible to disassemble riveted clock works. Ugh.
Thanks again,
Greg

Every once in a while you get that hour hand....

That Automatic Electric Monophone is a piece of work.  Makes we wish for a land line again.

Just whack those rivets off that 60s clock and tap for screws.  You'll be a better man for it.
What this country needs is a good $5 parts clock.

Larry, your phones are Deco dandies!!! All  that's missing is a Chrysler Airflow purring in the driveway and tickets for a first-class round trip on the "Normandie!" Are they in working condition?

Yes, they all work and so do a few hundred other phones here.  I like art deco stuff.  Some of my radios (www.youtube.com/@larrym7141/videos) are art deco also.
